Listener Mail 148
Voice 1
Welcome to Spotlight’s Listener Mail program. I’m Liz Waid.
Voice 2
And I’m Colin Lowther. Spotlight uses a special English method of broadcasting. It is easier for people to understand, no matter where in the world they live.
Voice 1
Today’s Spotlight is on you! In today’s programme, we listen to what you have to say about some of our recent programmes. And listen for some important news about our App and a new way to practice your English. Let’s get started.
Voice 2
In the programme ‘Drinking Alcohol’ we looked at how people around the world drink alcohol. Some drink it every day, but some never drink it. We asked if you drink alcohol or not. And we discovered that you had very different opinions and experiences.
Voice 1
Many people said they do not drink alcohol for religious reasons. But some people just do not like the taste of it. Paulo explains,
Voice 3
‘I tried to drink alcohol about five times in my life. The first time I was 16 years old. But I have never enjoyed the taste. I tried beer, vodka, whiskey and red wine. I still do not drink alcohol. I like fruit juice and water.’
Voice 2
Honneur does not drink alcohol either. He thinks alcohol is a bad thing. It affected his family badly. He told us,
Voice 4
‘Alcohol is the biggest dishonour that can happen in the life of a human being. My father was an alcoholic. It produced a lot of unhappiness in the whole family, with his drinking too much. I like to talk with friends, sing and go to parties to dance and have fun. I always do this, and I have a lot of fun without drinking even a drop of alcohol.’
Voice 2
That must have been a very difficult experience for Honneur. However other Spotlight listeners do enjoy drinking alcohol. Meo Hu likes beer and Huong Pham loves black beer from Germany. Regis explains how he drinks alcohol,
Voice 5
‘I drink a glass of red wine at home, one or two times a week. I also drink beer with my family when we gather together. But I avoid strong drinks, like whiskey. However, I am responsible and never drive after drinking alcohol.’
Voice 1
Regis enjoys drinking with his family. And we are happy that he is very careful in the way that he drinks. It is important to drink in moderation like this. Dela thinks that doing this is the right way to drink alcohol. She even believes that moderate drinking can be good for you.
Voice 6
‘Alcohol has the power to connect people together, improve feelings and encourage creativity too. Also drinking red wine in moderation may be advantageous for our heart and prevent it from serious diseases. However if you drink too much alcohol it can lead to the danger of getting addicted to alcohol. That can destroy the whole of a person’s life. I think all of us should follow a basic important rule which means to drink alcohol in moderation!’
Voice 2
Thank you Dela! Before we move to our next comments, we have some important news about our apps. In our last Listener Mail programme we told you about our new apps for both Apple and Android devices. Please make sure that you download our new app. You can visit our website and click on the link for each app. Or you can find it in the Google Play Store and in iTunes – just search for ‘Radio English’. When you download the app, leave a review! That will help us improve the app. But it will also help other people find it!

We also have some exciting news about a new website to help you study English – ‘Practical English Learning’. PracticalEnglishLearning.com is a Spotlight partner. You may even see some familiar faces there – Adam Navis and me! They have created some great classes using Spotlight materials. You can practice English, take quizzes, and even connect with other learners around the world. Have a look at it when you finish listening to this programme.

Our next comments come from two programmes about the serious subject of suicide or killing yourself. In the programmes ‘Suicide Warning Signs’ and ‘Surviving Suicide’ we talked about the worldwide problem of suicide. We talked about preventing it by looking for warning signs. And we looked at the hope that people can find in life when they survive suicide.
Voice 1
Paulo had some helpful ideas about how to prevent suicide. He had ideas for everyone – both for those who may feel suicidal and for everyone else.
Voice 3
‘We must think about the behaviour of the people around us. People always show some characteristic signs when they want to commit suicide. My suggestion to someone who wants to commit suicide is to do three things. First, think about the people who love you. Second, begin to do things that you enjoy. And third, try to improve your spiritual life. Doing these things will help people to avoid attempting suicide.’
Voice 2
Thank you for those ideas, Paulo. Camila knows from experience that family members are also important to help after a suicide attempt. She says,
Voice 7
‘I have a cousin who tried to commit suicide. Thank God he did not do it. Our aunt helped him.’
Voice 1
Thank you for sharing this story, Camila. Your aunt saved his life! Mr Winthant has experienced some difficult issues in his life. He explained how he was encouraged and found hope. He was able to remember that the difficult times would not last forever. He wrote,
Voice 8
‘When I face an issue in my life, I am encouraged by the words, “This too will pass away”. These words are very simple and you can easily speak them to other people. You should think deeply about the meaning of these words. You may feel a little less worried. The words made me feel happy. I believe we must never give up our life. We must always fight for the struggle that is life. Never surrender!’
Voice 2
Those are good words. Please remember that if you or someone you know is feeling suicidal, there is help. Talk to a friend or family member. Ask for help. Know that things can get better. Suicide is never the answer.
